My Monkey’s Monkey Bar Mittens

My firstborn’s kindergarten goals were to master the monkey bars on elementary’s playground and to learn how to play hopscotch like a pro.  But, westward sea winds made the metal bars quite chilly.  I tried out a few patterns, but they failed to leave enough room for thumbs or enough room to make it easy to slip hands out.  First, I made pencil notes in margins in a stew of various patterns.  Then, I made a mitt pattern on graph paper.  Now, announcing:

LEFT Mitten:
First, knit the flap.
CO 12 stitches.  Using 2 needles,  repeat k2, p2 [rib pattern] for 4 rows.  Set aside completed flap on one needle.

CO 32 stitches.  Divide evenly over 3 needles and join for working in the round.  Be sure not to twist.  To make mitten’s cuff, repeat k2, p2 [rib pattern] for 2 inhs.
Switch to stockinette stitch and inc 1 in the first round.  33 stitches.

Now, work the thumb gusset.
To set up the thumb gusset, k16 stitches, PM, M1L, k1, M1R, PM, k to end of round.  K 2 rounds even.
Knit gusset increase round as follows:  k to first M, slip M, M1L, k to second M, M1R, slip M, knit to end.  Repeat the last 3 rnds until you have 9 gusset stitches between the markers.  41 stitches total.
On next round, place gusset stitches on waste yarn, remove markers, and CO1 stitch and place M to mark the beginning of the round.  33 stitches total.

Next, you’ll make the slit in the palm of the mitten [so your little monkey can reach the monkey bars] and attach the flap.
K 2 rounds even.  Next round, k 2, bind off 12 stitches, k to end of round.  This makes the slit.
